Pattern, Fragmentation and connectivity Indicators PDF print email

This research in the landscape ecology field primarily focuses on how measuring and reporting forest spatial patterns and their changes over time, how to report on fragmentation processes and on change in connectivity over large regions in Europe. A list of "state" and "change" indicators was defined. List of indicators available here .

Indicators on core, connectors and edge forest were derived from morphological spatial pattern maps obtained with the Guidos software and additional GIS analysis. Indicators on connectivity were derived from an amended version of Conefor sensinode software . Indicators on forest landscape fragmentation and on forest edge interfaces types were derived from the combination of Landscape forest pattern mosaics types and forest morphological spatial pattern maps. Forest mosaic pattern maps  were derived from the GIS implementation of a landscape mosaic model .

Our results can be seen at:

  • View maps and query our indicators on European level forest pattern, fragmentation and connectivity assessment at the European Forest Data Center web site/EFDAC map viewer : European-wide state (year 2006) and change results in the period 1990-2000-2006 are aggregated per administrative units and per 25 km grid. View also raster morphological spatial pattern and landscape mosaic types maps. See also flyers on forest connectivity and on fragmentation of natural/semi-natural land in Europe.
  • View habitat pattern maps and measures in the harmonized habitat assessment exercise conducted in the EBONE project via the prototype map viewer (beta version)
  • Regional Assessment exercise : regional results were aggregated per fixed area grid and per environmental strata. Examples in the mediterranean zones and in the Carpathians are shown.
  • Fire and Natura2000 case study in Spain : Impact of fires on forest pattern and its connectivity in Natura 2000 sites and the wider country side.
