This study adresses the “Use of National Forest Inventories to downscale European forest diversity spatial information in five test areas, covering different geo-physical and geo-botanical conditions". It was carried out by the Italian Academy of Forest Sciences (AISF), Sweedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Institute of Forest Ecosystem research (IFER), Federal Research Centre for Forestry and Forest Products (BFH), Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, and the Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). It had a two years duration and was completed in May 2009.

This study had three objectives:

  • addresses the feasibility to harmonise NFIs data collected in 5 different European countries
  • to combine existing data at two different scales (as derived from remote sensing and from terrestrial sampling )
  • to address the correlation of large-scale aspects of forest diversity as derived from compositional (in particular main forest types) and structural landscape level indicators (in particular core forest and non-core (edge) forest ) with forest biodiversity-on-the-ground variables.
